Neutralise: How to Reimagine a Bold Rug Design in Quieter Colours
Can a vividly coloured rug design be made neutral? With a bespoke hand-knotted rug, the answer is always yes – colour is never fixed.

Some designs concentrate on a single hue, like POOL OF LIGHT. Others graduate across the spectrum, like MELTING SUN (above), or juxtapose bold, contrasting palettes, like PLAYTIME and HARLEQUIN (below). Neutral by Nature or Neutral by Request

Tonal Rugs: Neutral Not Plain
If you want something understated, a tonal rug is often the best solution. SUHAILAH is a perfect example. In this design, Deirdre selected a single wool colour, then picked out the silk elements in the same colour, creating quiet depth and dimension; a skill that can be equally applied to many other designs.
Limited Colour Designs With Subtle Contrast
A design can also work beautifully in one core colour with tonal variation. In GRAPHIC PEBBLE, Deirdre used a grey wool ground with a slightly lighter grey silk for the branch motif -enough contrast to define the pattern, without disrupting the calm.
Our CONCERTINA design is another perfect example of balanced neutrality, where the palette is restrained within certain tonal parameters. At the start the peachy pink leads into a soft, milky ice-cream centre. The steps are finished off in deeper berry, sorbet colours, which creates a subtle shadowing effect and the illusion of perspective. The result is Colour and Design without unnecessary distraction.
Endlessly Adaptable Designs
Some designs are built for flexibility. PANELS, for instance, exists in both green/gold and grey/red versions – proof of how adaptable a single design can be. Simply choose a neutral ground and a colour for the silk bars, and we’ll find the tones that fit.
Graded Designs: An Easy Solution
Graded designs are always an easy option to dial down, a simple tonal grade from beige’s to cream, or dark to light greys is so effective and can be as understated as necessary. The addition of silk in the mix adds a lustre that adds to the softness of the blend.
