In a world of ‘Buy Now’ buttons and next day delivery, the truly unique is increasingly rare and treasured.

We acknowledge the cost of buying a custom hand knotted rug is significantly higher than a mass produced or machine-made version but there are so many reasons to invest in bespoke, here we explore just some of them.

YOU ARE PART OF THE PROCESS

In our consumer driven world, instant gratification can be replaced by the joy of being involved in the design process from the outset, part of the creation of something distinctive, a one off and tailor made just for you and your space.

We love to see client’s embrace this design process and help them tease out exactly what they want from their custom rug.

UNIQUE AND MADE JUST FOR YOU

Deirdre Dyson started this business over twenty five years ago. When she couldn’t find contemporary rug designs to her taste, she started designing her own and a bespoke brand was born.  Deirdre therefore understands the bespoke process from the client side.

We take time to make sure size, design and colour selection are perfect, so when your finished rug arrives several months later, it exceeds expectations.

We can visit clients homes within the London M25 area, but this is just as successfully managed remotely (as clients worldwide will testify) using photographs, fabric swatches, colour tufts, samples and accurately colour matched renders for you to visualise your finished design.

This is a slow process but one to be enjoyed, embraced, and ultimately anticipated as you wait for your rug to be made.

THE PERFECT SIZE

Off the shelf rugs are obviously a specific set size but the wrong sized rug (even if it is the ‘right’ design) can take from its impact or detract completely from a scheme – better to get it right to the millimetre.

We ensure your selected design is adapted to suit your desired size to maintain proportion and the design’s integrity.

Rug designs can be adapted to take furniture placement into consideration and ensure light sources and other architectural considerations are allowed for.

Absolutely everything about your Deirdre Dyson hand knotted rug is tailored to suit.

THE PERFECT COLOUR SELECTION

After size and design there is of course colour, arguably the most crucial element of the bespoke process.

With a bespoke rug colour choice is exacting.  You can choose which colours to pick out from your existing interior and we can colour match accurately from our selection of over 5,000 wool and silk poms or select colours which complement an existing scheme.

Having a custom carpet means no compromising on colour. We colour match exactly and take time, considering colour choices in different lights over several days to ensure they sit tonally and harmoniously at any time of day.

PRESERVING ARTISAN SKILLS

Nepalese hand knotting is an age-old skill, passed down from generation to generation.  Having your rug hand made by our dedicated artisans preserves this skill and craftsmanship for future generations and allows this essential industry to thrive whilst you enjoy a hand made carpet created just for you.

BENEFITING SOCIETY…

The rug making industry is crucial to the Nepalese economy and particularly important to Nepalese women – this is an important consideration to Deirdre.

Our rug making gives employment to approx. 145 local people. Out of these 115 are weavers and amongst them 93 are women who have otherwise very little prospect of earning a decent livelihood for themselves and their families.  The empowerment this gives these talented women cannot be underestimated.

We are partners of GoodWeave International, a network of non-profit organisations dedicated to ending illegal child labour in the rug making industry. We adhere to their standards and all our carpets proudly bear GoodWeave label.

GoodWeave has helped drastically reform the hand-knotted carpet industry in India, Nepal and Pakistan. Its model centres on extensive monitoring and auditing at every stage of the supply chain.

LONGEVITY

We select the finest quality Tibetan wool and pure silk for our hand knotted rugs.  These naturally occurring materials will last a lifetime and the unique Nepalese knot used by our craftspeople means every single one is secure and unique.  The result is an heirloom quality carpet that, with some simple care, will last for generations. A Deirdre Dyson carpet is a highly sustainable product.

… AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Never have we been more aware of the climate crisis and the effect our consumer driven, throwaway society is having on our natural world. We are used to having what we want immediately to the detriment of our environment and investing in slow design that lasts has never been more important.

We use only natural materials in our rugs, never synthetic fibres and the whole process has a low environmental impact.  We are ever conscious of making our rugs as sustainably as possible.

The most important element however is a Deirdre Dyson rug is designed to last.  A contemporary classic, an artwork for the floor that once made is an heirloom to be enjoyed and passed on.

A LASTING INVESTMENT

A Deirdre Dyson rug is never simply a floor covering. It is the product of months of careful collaboration, exacting craftsmanship, and a commitment to the people and materials behind every knot. When you choose bespoke, you are choosing patience over instant gratification, individuality over uniformity, and longevity over the disposable. The result is a piece that belongs entirely to you and your home, ready to be enjoyed and ultimately passed down. In a world that moves ever faster, there is something quietly radical about choosing to wait for something made to last a lifetime.
