Case Study: A Bold, Custom ATTITUDE Carpet for a Manhattan Penthouse
When a New York-based client passed by our Kings Road gallery window, something stopped her in her tracks: Deirdre’s ATTITUDE rug design. Striking and sophisticated, the carpet instantly captured her imagination. She knew it would be the perfect anchor for her thoughtfully curated Manhattan penthouse and would marry well with a newly ordered Maharam-upholstered sofa and a pair of Utrecht armchairs in vivid yellow and red velvets.
A Vision Takes Shape Across the Atlantic
Once back in New York, the client sent us a selection of fabric swatches. From there, Deirdre and our Design Technician Nichola began the creative journey of tailoring ATTITUDE to her exact requirements.
The first challenge? Finding just the right ground colour — something that not only complemented the warm tones of the apartment’s parquet floor but also sat tonally with the colours selected for the silk bars and which worked with the apartment’s exceptional natural light.
To ensure a perfect match, we created strike-offs (small colour samples) so the client could see larger areas of the ground colour in situ. This was essential to ensure the colour worked perfectly.
Tweaking the Design for a Perfect Fit
Though most of the collaboration happened remotely, the client made the most of work trips to London by coming into our studio to agree on colours in person, discuss design options and hone exactly what she wanted from the carpet — an efficient and creative mix of long-distance collaboration and in person meetings. While the original ATTITUDE design features a dynamic tumble of silk bars, the client envisioned something more restrained — fewer, larger bars with a bolder, more architectural feel. We adjusted the composition, rebalancing the scale and placement of the bars, creating a brand-new iteration of the design. Once the artwork was agreed on, it was hand knotted to perfection by our Nepalese weavers.
The Result: A Bespoke Modern Heirloom
The finished rug is more than a design feature — it’s a tailored expression of personality and place. Thoughtfully customised to complement the client’s furnishings and home, it also holds its own as a contemporary statement piece whilst being true to Deirdre’s original.
