Hand knotted rugs – the foundation of an interior

Sometimes we want a rug to make a statement and inform the interior scheme of a room: perhaps the focal point in a hallway or reception area, or a vibrant burst of colour in an otherwise neutral space.

On other occasions, a rug is required to ground a room. Its design may not announce itself immediately, but it unifies the interior in a way that can initially go unnoticed. Over time, as you or your guests sit and relax into the room, the carpet reveals itself: the perfect tonal grade, a seamlessly erratic jumble of silk bars in just the right colour palette, and the sensual texture of dense hand knotted wool and silk underfoot. It is a carpet quietly interacting with its environment, creating the vital foundational layer on which the success of the whole room is built.

This is where bespoke wins the day: a carpet created precisely to convey the mood and atmosphere that an interior designer or client wants to achieve, and ultimately something beautiful, timeless and unique.

We thought we’d look at some carpets which work particularly well in this context, with the proviso that all Deirdre Dyson carpets are custom made to order. Even the most vibrant designs can be recreated in whatever colourway is needed to achieve your desired result.

ASTRAL

This is ASTRAL, recently featured in this Madame Figaro editorial. We think the image showcases the subtle success of Deirdre Dyson’s tonal grade, cleverly bookended with bands of darker colour and interrupted by silk waves selected from the grade. It is an ombre masterpiece that would form the perfect base for the most elegant of interiors. We love the juxtaposition of the burnt orange chair and table, which is reminiscent of our next project.

FALLING RIBBONS

Here, designer Charlotte Lane Fox uses Deirdre Dyson’s FALLING RIBBONS to similar effect. The carefully chosen silks of the ribbons in this pair of carpets are muted enough to create a calm anchor in a well-considered yet unforced space. Again, the burnt orange interior of the antique Chinese cabinet creates a focal point but the grounding presence of the carpet is vital to the success of this room.

BURLESQUE and SUNBLUSH

For this private residence in Paris, Deirdre Dyson created two carpets for an adjoining bedroom and sitting room. In the bedroom, subtle tonal silks in taupe and beige complement a cream wool ground in BURLESQUE, creating a quiet formality and a luxurious feel as you step out of bed. The design sits harmoniously with both the owner’s carefully curated contemporary art and the classical architectural elements of the space.

In the sitting room, Deirdre chose a muted grade from blush to sage green, adding just the merest hint of colour to this refined room. Although neither carpet matches the other, they speak to one another through Deirdre’s masterful colour selection and clever use of the two yarns at her disposal: wool and silk.

IMPULSE

Finally, this is IMPULSE. At first glance it is a very unassuming bordered carpet, but look closer and you will see that the alternating bars at the edges use over 22 graded colours, adding a layer of interest that is not immediately noticeable underfoot. Clever but quiet design.
