Choosing a Hand Knotted Rug for Your Hallway or Entryway

A hallway is the first impression a guest has of your home and sets the tone for everything that follows. Selecting a hand-knotted rug for this area is a significant statement of intent decor-wise but with the right guidance, the result can be transformational. Here’s everything you need to consider when deciding on a custom Deirdre Dyson rug for your hallway.

Design

In a hallway or entryway, a slightly busier, more intricate pattern can be a sensible choice.

High-traffic areas are naturally more prone to scuffs and footprints.  A detailed rug design is more forgiving than a plain or minimalist one and will camouflage any marks or stains which might stand out in large area of lighter colour.  Some good examples from Deirdre Dyson’s Design Library would be HIGHRISE, FALLING LEAVES, PLUMES, SUN SHAFT or TREE BARK.

A graded design is another beautiful option for hallways, creating a natural sense of procession as you move through the space. Imagine a gradual shift from pale, airy tones at the entrance deepening to richer, warmer shades as the hallway opens into the home or the reverse, drawing the eye forward with a lightening palette. This sense of ‘journey’ can feel both welcoming and set the intent for the rest of the interior.

It’s worth thinking about how the hallway rug will relate to the floorcoverings in the rooms that lead from it. A thoughtfully chosen rug can tie together disparate spaces, pulling out a colour from the sitting room walls, echoing a tone from a beloved artwork, or establishing a design language that continues through the home.

Size

In a hallway, size really does matter. A rug that is too small for the space will look lost, out of proportion, and can even create a trip hazard particularly at corners or thresholds. A well-sized rug, on the other hand, anchors the space, creates a focal point, and feels welcoming underfoot.

Space around the rug is as important. As a general guide, we would suggest leaving a minimum of 20cm between the edge of the rug and the walls on either side, of course depending on the size of the hall itself. Particular care should be taken to ensure clearance is allowed for door openings.

Don’t forget to factor in any furniture when measuring up. Console tables, chairs, umbrella stands, etc all need to sit comfortably in relation to the rug, whether placed on top of it or beside it. Taking sufficient time to make a careful floor plan of the space before commissioning is always time well spent and we will always double check and advise to ensure all of these things have been considered before artwork is signed off.

Composition

For a hallway, we would always recommend 100% wool. The Tibetan wool used in Deirdre Dyson’s carpets is exceptionally robust. It’s high proportion of lanolin also makes it naturally more resistant to stains.

However if you’re drawn to the lustre of silk, a wool and silk mix offers an elegant compromise. By specifying your preferred proportion of silk, you can introduce that beautiful light-reflective quality without the delicacy or susceptibility to crushing that a pure silk rug might have in a well-used area. Even a relatively small amount of silk can lift a design considerably. Deirdre Dyson’s BULRUSHES rug uses a 2/3 wool/1/3 silk mix in its background grade and the custom runner version of GLIMPSE pictured below uses a 1/3 wool 2/3 silk mix in the lighter areas.

It’s also worth noting that a hand-knotted rug is incredibly dense with 100 knots per square inch which lends it excellent acoustic properties. In larger entrance halls, which can sometimes feel cold and echoey, a substantial hand-knotted rug will help to absorb sound and bring a sense of warmth and intimacy to the space.

Colour

This is where you can truly have fun. Unlike living rooms or bedrooms spaces that often call for a degree of restraint, a hallway invites boldness and is the perfect place to make a statement. A striking colour palette or an unexpected combination can really add the wow factor, or if you would rather practice restraint, subtly signpost the interior beyond.

Think of a hallway rug is an introduction and statement of intent.  An opportunity to introduce colours or create a mood that recurs and develops throughout your home.
