LAYERS – an exhibition of enamel artist Belinda Coyne’s work with Deirdre Dyson’s hand knotted rug designs 3.11-14.11.25
As part of Chelsea Design Quarter 2025 Autumn Edit, Brighton based enamel artist Belinda Coyne will display selected artworks in Deirdre Dyson’s London Gallery (554 King’s Road SW6 2DZ) from 3rd – 14th November 2025. In partnership with Handmade Chelsea* and the BIID.
The unmissable pop-up exhibition, Layers, will feature dramatic pieces from Belinda’s latest enamel and metalwork collections, alongside Deirdre’s luxury carpet designs.
For the occasion, Belinda has also created a special commission commemorating Deirdre’s 25th anniversary in response to themes Deirdre has explored over her 25 years in carpet design.
Lady Deirdre Dyson says, “I like to support other talented artists and for several years we have hosted people whose work I admire and whose creative output I feel a synergy with. We welcome Belinda Coyne to share the space in my gallery as part of the Chelsea Design Quarter event this Autumn. Belinda’s art is a celebration of the unique application to her handmade, bespoke craftsmanship.”
“Layers” very much captures the approach Deirdre and I share in our contemporary creations and textural aesthetic. It reflects the physical side of my creative process applying hand-painted and wet-process sprayed enamel to copper and steel panels and bowls utilising the properties of the metal to enable extensive reworking and layering. Deirdre incorporates overlapping layers of colour and shapes into her carpet designs. We are both artists who share a love of bringing inspiration from the natural environment into own abstract interpretations,” says Belinda Coyne.
Belinda’s exhibits will include stunning handmade steel and copper bowls and cylinders, as well as a polaroid window showcase of her Atlantic Coastline series. Her artworks are created through her expressive enamelling and skilful metalwork techniques. Providing a cross-cultural experience and will sit alongside Deirdre’s latest collection of hand-knotted luxury carpets ‘Light Play’ and four of her reimagined signature designs; SUNLIT, SLIVERS, CARNIVAL and POOL OF LIGHT released this Autumn to mark Deirdre’s 25th anniversary in the industry.
Belinda’s enamel work reflects her layers of experience and accumulated memories of diverse landscapes from personal exploration around the British Isles. Her featured Atlantic Coastline series is inspired by the rugged, windswept beaches on the West Coast of Scotland, Ireland and Wales while the copper and steel bowls on display are in response to walks along the ridge of chalk downlands between Shoreham and Lewes in East Sussex. Her approach to enamelling is expressive, emotional and intuitive, grounded in a craft-making tradition but defined by a contemporary approach to her application methods, scale and conceptually engaging in the environmental agenda.

After a 30 year career as an Art and Design teacher, Brighton based artist Belinda Coyne began her own creative pursuits after completing an MA in Craft and Design at Brighton University, where she honed her own technical skills and practice in enamelling and metalwork.
Belinda’s work reflects her layers of experience and accumulated memories of diverse landscapes. Her approach to enamelling is expressive, emotional and intuitive, grounded in a craft-making tradition but defined by a contemporary approach to her application methods, scale and conceptually engaging in the environmental agenda.
Her skilled techniques include the application of hand-painted and wet-process sprayed enamel to copper and steel panel and bowls utilising the properties of the metal to enable extensive reworking and physical intervention. She incises, rubs, sgraffitos and brushes back the initial layers to create gestures and marks that echo the natural landscape. Through her interplay of opaque and transparent sieved enamels, Belinda brings visual depth and complexity to all her pieces.
Her work stands alone on its visual merit but also engages with a wider audience through the diversity in her collections and varied presentation of each unique piece.
