Deirdre’s Design Inspiration – Water

Deirdre Dyson at work in her studio at home.

Continuing our exploration of inspiration and what keeps us #INspired, Deirdre draws inspiration for her designs from myriad sources but one recurring area of fascination is water – be it BULRUSHES reflected in a lake or lapping water on the shore in SEAWASH.

We thought exploring some of these rug designs would be fascinating – the source of inspiration being fundamentally the same, the designs themselves could not be more different.

BULRUSHES

BULRUSHES

One of Deirdre’s more figurative designs and one that has captured people’s imagination and become a classic and was inspired by Deirdre’s painting of the same name.

This rug features the naturally abstracted forms of bulrushes, their bending shafts reflected and refracted in lake water.

Deirdre uses a graded wool/silk mix background to recreate the skyline and lake water which merge on the horizon to create this perfectly framed design.  The finished rug is so captivating one client choose to hang it on a wall of their home.

BULRUSHES won both the International Wool Carpet & Rug Awards (Design Sector) 2017 and the International Design & Architecture Awards (Flooring, Carpet & Rugs) 2017.

SEAWASH

SEAWASH indigo

The success of Deirdre’s SEAWASH rug design is all in the grade – which required Deirdre’s exceptional eye for colour to achieve this seamless ebb and flow effect.

Originally Deirdre designed the carpet in two versions, INDIGO (above) and BEIGE (below) which have become favourite designs amongst clients, we have created both large scale carpets and runners from this endlessly versatile design.

SEAWASH comes alive hand knotted in lustrous 100% silk (as in the versions above), providing the perfect watery, iridescent finish but has also been recreated several times using varying colourways in hand knotted and gun tufted 100% wool versions.

NAUTICAL

In NAUTICAL Deirdre again treats her source inspiration completely differently – abstracting sea water into fluid but solid geometric shapes, creating a feeling of depth and movement by alternating the same colours in wool and silk.

Clients can of course change these colours from the original water based palate but fundamentally this ‘breaking down’ of the sea to its most basic elements is the key to this design.

LILYPOND

LILYPOND
Deirdre Dyson Exclusive Carpets and Rugs LILYPOND

For LILYPOND Deirdre created a subtle, light to dark grade to give the impression of still pond water.

This circular grade, a challenge for our weavers, creates a sense of depth and bursts of colour are provided by the silk lilypads creating a 3D  effect.

SEASCAPE and SEA MIST

Both these designs are based on light (silk bars) reflected on sea water (a graded wool background)

SEASCAPE is an incredible 7m in width, reflecting the expansiveness of the sea and a chance for Deirdre to illustrate just how large hand knotted carpets can be.

SEASCAPE features shots of sunlight on the sea’s surface whilst SEA MIST uses stormier hues and was made on a more domestic scale but is no less effective.

SEASCAPE is currently available in it’s original 7 x 2.3m size and as a 1 x 2.9m runner in our sample sale.

ROMAN POND

ROMAN POND

ROMAN POND

Whilst not strictly inspired by water itself, the first of Deirdre’s mosaic designs was inspired by mosaic lined Roman ponds, the intricacy of ROMAN POND poses a challenge to our weavers as the thin lines of wool ‘grouting’ around the ingots of silk are incredibly complex to achieve (and individually carve out) but the finished effect is stunning.

RIVULETS
The everyday source inspiration for this rug only adds to its allure  – RIVULETS mimics the trail of rain drops on a window pane – the simplest of inspiration led Deirdre to this wonderfully subtle graded design.

Finally this year’s LOOKING GLASS Collection was inspired by glass and glass objects including a water filled flask in LOOKING THROUGH, discarded pieces of sea worn glass in FLOATING GLASS and abstracted light and forms through glass and water in LIGHT FRAGMENTS.  See the full collection here.

FROM LOOM TO ROOM…Part Two

Part two of Edison’s blog post on behind the scene facts about the unique and timeless quality of your bespoke hand knotted rug.

Your Carpet could be an antique of the future.

Our carpets are made to the highest standards and are heirloom quality pieces that will be enjoyed and appreciated as much in the future as they are today. As a trained artist, Deirdre Dyson approaches every design as a work of art, each being able to compliment the breadth of different interior styles and trends. Hand knotted carpets also hold their value very well.

Quality materials make a quality product.

Quality is key. From Deirdre’s initial ideas and design sketches, to the materials employed and the skill of our weavers and London team, we make sure that only the best factors and considerations are invested into creating carpets for your home and interior space.

A design consultancy service is available at our London gallery which is located in the heart of the Chelsea Design Quarter. We are here to assist and guide you in making the right choice and using the best combinations of materials and colours (from 5,000 available colours).

The Tibetan wool used in our carpets are rich in natural oils, making them not only soft and naturally stain resistant but also very hardwearing. The superior Chinese silk that is incorporated into many of our designs is smooth, cooling and full of vibrancy.

“Time is what we want most…and what we use best”.

Okay, so we’ve adapted the old saying by William Penn, but we think it describes our work ethic well, as every carpet creation requires time and consideration.

The design process in adapting and creating designs for our clientele takes as long as it takes to make our customers dream a reality but generally from sign off, a carpet will go into production and be ready within 3-4 months (as a general guide to lead time). We use the latest design technologies available in the carpet industry and for every carpet we make, a full-sized graph of the design is produced and hung from the back of the loom, for guidance precision. These graphic sheets look like works of art in their own right and are protected to ensure that they can’t be copied or reproduced elsewhere. We take copyright infringement very seriously

The PLUMAGE Collection at Maison 2019

Deirdre’s new rug collection has received a wonderful reception at Maison & Objet Paris, where eight of nine new designs on display in Hall 8, stand A32 were showcased on a custom made, towering stand painted with Argile paint colours selected personally by Deirdre to complement each of the new carpet designs.  Deirdre relishes the opportunity to be on the stand at Maison meet clients and discuss the designs and their inspiration.

Yet again Deirdre has pushed the boundaries of the art of hand knotting to create very distinctive designs using pops of colour (HARLEQUIN), intricate detail (PLUMES/FEATHER BOUND/QUILLS) or colour grading (GOLDEN PHEASANT, EAGLE) from the abstracted (MANDARIN) to the figurative (FLIGHT) creating a new collection that celebrates her instinctive eye for colour and cleverly plays with the shapes and forms of birds and their feathers to create unique designs.

Each design uses varying amounts of silk to mirror the shimmering nature of bird’s plumage and Deirdre’s chosen colour palette is shot with vibrant hues that give the organic forms a 3D quality.

Bordered rugs such as BURLESQUE and FEATHER BOUND are endlessly adaptable – for use under a dining table or bed whereas the bold Studio 54esque GOLDEN PHEASANT makes a statement all of its own as does the elegant scale of the exquisite EAGLE.

Last year’s HORIZONS Collection played with scale and Deirdre continues this trend with the largest carpet on display, EAGLE mirroring the wing span of its namesake, an impressive 3.4 metres wide.

As with all Deirdre’s designs these sample carpets are just the start, each design can be created in any colourway or size required and most designs can also be gun tufted in 100% wool should the client or space require it.

NEW COLLECTION LANDING AT MAISON!

We can’t wait to reveal the new rug designs Deirdre Dyson has created for her 2019 PLUMAGE collection.

With an intuitive eye for colour, Deirdre cleverly combines the bright shades (violet blues, cherry red, slate blue, black) and abstract markings of a pretty male sea duck for her HARLEQUIN design.

EAGLE  (pictured) is an impressive 3.4 metres wide, depicting the magnificent wing span of this majestic bird – the large scale allows Deirdre to include intricate feathery detail and create a spectacular three-dimensional effect through directional colour grading.

Other designs, such as the rich colour palette of GOLDEN PHEASANT, accurately reflects the beautiful tones of this quintessential British bird.

Deirdre’s practice as a fine artist allows her to expertly combine colours to create a beautiful composition that will enhance any surface and interior, as she skillfully captures the shimmer of the natural oils of a feather through the use of gorgeous silk against a luxurious wool background.

Deirdre says:

In this collection I have delved deep into the feathers of pheasants and abstracted designs of ducks.  I singled out some feathers and enfolded carpets with others.  Together they make a varied collection of colourful drama and soft luxury.  In creating them, our brilliant craftspeople have succeeded with the most difficult technical challenges I have ever set them.”

Be the first to see the new collection unveiled on 18 January 2019 at the prestigious Maison et Objet interiors exhibition in Paris, in Hall 8 ‘Forever Signature’, stand A32.

“I can sing a rainbow…”

Read on for Edison’s festive advice using Deirdre’s STREAMER rug designs.

As reported in House Beautiful and according to John Lewis, this year’s biggest Christmas decoration trend is to go full-out rainbow. Yes, think Joseph and his hyper-technicoloured dream-coat, think Wizard of Oz in HD, think saturation spectrum overload.

This may be not be to everyone’s taste, but hey, Christmas is about having fun after all.

Our STREAMER design in either colourway, would be a great companion to your rainbow inspired room. Linking up larger pieces of furniture and accessories by using just a limited colour palette, will give your decorations more impact.

Pair the STREAMER carpet with a grey sofa such as this velvet beauty from Swoon, for deep seated luxury.

Just add some colour coordinated cushions to complete the look.

Red graded option, Simon Key Bertman. Blue velvet option, Faversham by Mercer41

To get your tree looking its best, try decorating with this delightful box of glass baubles from John Lewis.

For additional visual warmth group some gold candlesticks (H&M Home) and add to them hand-drawn, coloured candles from Shearer.

When Christmas is over and those festive decorations are all packed and boxed away, your Streamer carpet can have all the attention back. Paired with an Onda curved glass coffee table from glassfurniture.co.uk will accentuate the curves of the flowing ribbons.

The red and grey version of STREAMER is featured in the sample sale.

Visit our website to take advantage of on-going sale offers, with an additional 5% taken off all sale prices from now until December 22nd, 2018.

From Concept to Carpet

Every Deirdre Dyson rug design starts as a drawing and is hand coloured by Deirdre. The designs are then faithfully translated to a digital format in our studio in order to be mapped by our Nepalese weavers and finally woven by hand. Colours are matched from a selection of over 5,000 wool and silk poms.

Deirdre’s background as a Fine Artist and innate sense of colour guides every design. The best way to understand the evolution of the creative journey; from concept to the finished carpet, is through this film created by Deirdre’s long-term Photographer, Colin Peacock.

With each new collection, Colin adds to this visual archive creating a unique record of Deirdre’s design process and acknowledging just how faithful the finished carpets are to Deirdre’s initial sketches.

Where possible, Colin has included Deirdre’s original inspiration, be it a stone or seascape, which tells the backstory for each featured design; however abstracted the finished article.

Enjoy this carefully crafted footage, which will be updated soon with Deirdre’s 2019 collection.

Inspired by Nature – Deirdre Dyson collaborates with Echlin

The latest turn-key residence by visionary design and development studio Echlin is Leverton House – located just moments from Kensington Palace and Gardens in Ossington Street, Notting Hill.

Set behind an attractive period façade this state of the art modern home is a nature-inspired sanctuary in the city.

The parkside location together with a light-filled internal courtyard featuring verdant living walls (a USP of all Echlin developments) floods the interior with light and formed the starting point for the interior design.

An integral part of the interior is a large hand knotted wool and silk version of Deirdre’s FALLING LEAVES carpet.

Deirdre has said of the project:

I was approached by [our Chelsea neighbours] Echlin to design a carpet especially for their new project, Leverton House.  Echlin’s concept was to bring the outside in.

The inspiration for this bespoke version of Falling Leaves came from standing under a Winter tree with branches bending downwards, above and around me…Echlin selected the colours to create airy lightness and to work perfectly with their nature-inspired concept.

Echlin has utilised British designed, natural and hand-crafted materials wherever possible in addition to the highest quality bespoke joinery and fittings throughout the property.

Other brands and designers featured include Tom O’Dell of Odells Studios, Hugh Miller Furniture Studio Haran, Johnston’s of Elgin, Bennett Silk and James Hare, Rachel Vosper and True Grace together with Walpole British Luxury members such as Richard Brendon, Ettinger and Nyetimber, and Brands of Tomorrow  The New Craftsmen with artwork by London based Italian artist Gabriele Cappelli.

Leverton House is currently listed for sale with Knight Frank, further details here

AGNES REVIEWS SEPTEMBER’S MAISON & OBJET 2017

We are regular exhibitors at January’s Maison & Objet and our Parisian Sales & Marketing Representative Agnes was on hand to visit the September show and select her favourite products and trends.

Agnes was particularly taken with the Comfort Zone in Hall 7 an area dedicated to promoting ‘physical calm and peace of mind’ in the home environment.

The pink and pastel trend shows no sign of abating, toned down pastels and pale pink hues were a prominent feature across a wide product range.

One of Agnes favourite brands and long-time M&O exhibitor is Objet de Curiosité, a French brand from Lyon whose eclectic exhibits provide a quirky and humorous stand.

A stand out brand for Agnes was HEY-SIGN which presented innovative, design-oriented products customised in high quality wool felt in bright, enlivening colours.

Agnes final pick matériO was created in 2000 by a young French team who track cutting edge materials and emerging material innovation from all over the world.
