One Design six ways – Bespoke SEA MIST carpets for a New York apartment

Deirdre Dyson recently completed a large-scale residential project which required her to design of six carpets for the bedrooms of a Manhattan apartment by celebrated Interior Design Remi Tessier.

Deirdre selected one adaptable rug design, SEA MIST, and then created six different custom grades for each carpet with corresponding bars picked out in complimentary silks.  This allowed continuity between the rooms whilst creating unique versions of each.

The finished carpets add cohesion and flow to the otherwise understated rooms, where surface materials have been carefully selected in muted tones for their luxurious, light and tactile properties.

The carpets add a burst of individuality to each bedroom and dictate the colour palette. Surrounded by the refined natural surfaces (marble, oak) and of course glass – the incredible views speak for themselves and remain uninterrupted. Each room now has its own identity without dominating as per the original brief.

Essential texture is added by these hand knotted designs, graded in Tibetan wool with bars of pure silk.  Another layer of luxury on the uniform oak parquet floors with a sumptuous feel underfoot.

Each bespoke rug defines the room it’s in – the upholstery on an eye-catching and fun pair of Edra Fauteuil Rose chairs was colour matched exactly with a deep red selected from the grade in the ‘red’ version of SEA MIST.

Whereas in the main suite the blues of the grade are reflected in oversized velvet cushions and even the blue of the en-suite taps.

Finally, pieces from the owner’s extensive art collection were selected to compliment Deirdre’s colour choice for each bedroom.

The entire scheme works in harmony anchored by these specially created rug designs – a sense of comfort, restfulness and luxury in this already architecturally impressive home.

A Trio of Carpets Designed to Unify a Large Living Space in New York

Deirdre Dyson has used three variations of her classic FALLING STICKS design to create cohesion between the three ‘zones’ of the salon in this Manhattan apartment.

The hand knotted carpets create connection in what would otherwise feel a vast space.  Each background is in the same coloured Tibetan wool (a neutral grey) and the bar detail on each use the same selection of Chinese silks (six in total) comprising a dramatic cobalt blue, beiges and silver greys.

The easy option would have been to use the same rug design in each area but Deirdre has cleverly used the same colour palette and similar design components in very different ways so the carpets reference each other but each stands alone as a unique design.

As you enter the salon, the music/library area features a bordered carpet edged with alternately sized vertical bars to allow space for the dramatic large circular coffee table in the centre (cleverly connecting with the curved staircase and marble in the hallway)

The classic ATTITUDE carpet, a signature rug design, which clients gravitate towards again and again, centres the TV area, topped by an Yves Klein coffee table, which Deirdre referenced when selecting the blue of the blue silk bars on each design.

In the seating area, which focuses on the specular views of the New York skyline, the final design, MOVING BARS, features a border of horizontal bars which loosen and ‘escape’ towards the centre, where another Yves Klein coffee table sits, partnering the one at the other side of the room.

These three carpets create a suite of designs that quietly connect the three areas in this vast space and link together in a subtle and harmonious way.
