FROM LOOM TO ROOM…Part Two

Part two of Edison’s blog post on behind the scene facts about the unique and timeless quality of your bespoke hand knotted rug.

Your Carpet could be an antique of the future.

Our carpets are made to the highest standards and are heirloom quality pieces that will be enjoyed and appreciated as much in the future as they are today. As a trained artist, Deirdre Dyson approaches every design as a work of art, each being able to compliment the breadth of different interior styles and trends. Hand knotted carpets also hold their value very well.

Quality materials make a quality product.

Quality is key. From Deirdre’s initial ideas and design sketches, to the materials employed and the skill of our weavers and London team, we make sure that only the best factors and considerations are invested into creating carpets for your home and interior space.

A design consultancy service is available at our London gallery which is located in the heart of the Chelsea Design Quarter. We are here to assist and guide you in making the right choice and using the best combinations of materials and colours (from 5,000 available colours).

The Tibetan wool used in our carpets are rich in natural oils, making them not only soft and naturally stain resistant but also very hardwearing. The superior Chinese silk that is incorporated into many of our designs is smooth, cooling and full of vibrancy.

“Time is what we want most…and what we use best”.

Okay, so we’ve adapted the old saying by William Penn, but we think it describes our work ethic well, as every carpet creation requires time and consideration.

The design process in adapting and creating designs for our clientele takes as long as it takes to make our customers dream a reality but generally from sign off, a carpet will go into production and be ready within 3-4 months (as a general guide to lead time). We use the latest design technologies available in the carpet industry and for every carpet we make, a full-sized graph of the design is produced and hung from the back of the loom, for guidance precision. These graphic sheets look like works of art in their own right and are protected to ensure that they can’t be copied or reproduced elsewhere. We take copyright infringement very seriously

The newly refurbished 554 Kings Road is revealed!

554 Kings Road

On Wednesday 9th September Deirdre and Architect Timothy Hatton welcomed invited guests to celebrate the re-opening of our spectacularly transformed carpet gallery at 554 Kings Road.

The complete remodelling, masterminded by Tim, and undertaken by building contractors 800 Group, includes the addition of a dramatic glass box extension on the ground floor, a roof terrace accessed by a retractable glass roof and galleried first and second floors inspired by Kew Gardens Sackler Crossing.

Sally Storey of Lighting Design International created a bespoke lighting system to showcase Deirdre’s carpet designs to stunning effect.

The piece de resistance however has to be the patinated steel staircase designed by Tim Hatton and created by New York based metal worker William R. Nitzberg of Enzo Metal – the staircase was entirely hand finished by William and floods the stairwell with light.

On the first floor Colin Peacock‘s wonderful film captures the journey of Deirdre’s designs from their inspiration and Deirdre’s initial sketches and drawings,  through to the ancient artisan dying and weaving processes involved in their  manufacture in Nepal.

The film is interspersed with a visual feast, and possibly the last known footage, of Nepalese landmarks destroyed during the devistating earthquake which took place just as filming ended.

The entire space creates a light-filled, calm environment in which to browse Deirdre’s designs and delight in her inspired use of colour and texture.

554 KINGS ROAD REFURBISHMENT NEARING COMPLETION

554 Kings Road

We are counting down the days to our move back to the completely gutted and remodelled showroom at 554 Kings Road – the next few weeks will be a flurry of joiners, electricians and decorators as work nears completion.

The light and airy four-story gallery space has been designed by Timothy Hatton Architects as the perfect foil for Deirdre’s carpet designs.

Timothy has collaborated closely with Deirdre and manager Edison to create not only a light, airy and calm environment allowing Deirdre’s designs to speak for themselves, but also a practical workspace for Deirdre and her staff.

Even though the carpets will take centre stage, the architects have incorporated several surprise elements – the piece de resistance surely being the patinated steel cantilevered staircase fabricated by New York based metal-worker William R. Nitzberg of Enzo Metal.

William’s sculptural metalwork has been exhibited at Moma and the Whitney Museum and the staircase is not only a major architectural statement but also a mammoth feat of engineering, as our Site Manager Kevin will confirm!

Light has been a consideration from the beginning and both a retractable roof light on the top floor and ‘glass box’ extension on the ground floor allow natural light to flood through the building.

A totally bespoke lighting system has also been designed by Sally Storey, founder of Lighting Design International specifically to highlight the intense colour and subtle contrasts in Deirdre’s designs.

This Blog entry is very much absent of images but trust us, it will be worth the wait.  All will be revealed soon and we promise it will be spectacular!
