SIZING AND TIPS
Size matters
We would suggest going for the largest carpet size you can comfortably accommodate. The ‘floating rug’ look, where a small carpet sits in the middle of a large space, touching no furniture is best avoided. It will do nothing for your space, make little impact and will struggle to pull the room together. To make a rug work and gel all the elements of a room, it should ideally touch or go under furniture. Consider whether your furniture will sit on the rug or just off it. Remember that you will pay for the areas of carpet you don’t see or use. A rug that goes just 30cm under the front of a sofa could work equally as well as having a sofa sitting entirely on the rug. It’s a question of how much zoning of a space you wish to emphasise. For rugs to sit under a dining table, we would recommend a minimum of a 70cm extension past the table on all sides, to allow for chairs to be pulled back comfortably. Creating a template with masking tape or newspaper will help visualise the size.Shape
As your rug is a bespoke order, you are not limited to the standard rectangular shape. Carpets work equally well in square shapes too. And why not consider a round carpet to go under a round dining table or to soften a very boxy room.Colour and pattern
The real question is how much of a statement do you want the rug to be? Think neutral tones and delicate, organic shapes for a more understated approach. Simple grading can be just as effective as any design or consider creating a tonal carpet where using the same colour in wool and silk may be the solution. Take inspiration from the colours found in and around your space when considering the colour palette for your carpet. Solid, rich colours and bold, geometric patterns will make a rug ‘pop’ and may be what is needed to bring life to that grey sofa or monochrome room. If you’re in doubt, then we’re here to help and guide you, working with over 5,000 colours.Materials
Both wool and silk are hard-wearing, natural materials. The Tibetan wool used in our hand knotted rugs is inherently resilient to stains and is perfect for use in all areas. Wool has a matt finish, is naturally insulating and can help to dampen down sound. Silk is a cool and naturally reflective material, soft to touch yet very hard-wearing. The more silk incorporated into the rug design, the higher the price per square metre. This rule also applies when grading either wool or silk, as the grading technique requires a higher level of skill and additional time. All of our designs can be adapted from 100% wool to 100% silk, with or without grading… the choice is yours.
